Private Space in a Collectivist Setting

A chapter in the book “The Renewal of Dwelling – European Housing Construction 1945–1975ˮ edited by Elli Mosayebi and Michael Kraus, published by Triest Verlag in Zürich. The chapter explores how post-war housing in Zagreb negotiated the relationship between collectivist planning principles and the articulation of private living spaces within large-scale residential structures. The analyzed developments not only quantitatively answered the pressing housing need at the time, but also decidedly shaped the city’s overall image and formed its contemporary architectural and urban character, along with defining the lifestyle and urban habits of its residents.
